Hochland Tourenplanung

    Hallo zusammen,


    nach meiner ersten Islandreise (im wesentlichen einmal die Ringstraße rund) bin ich so begeistert, dass ich nächsten August gerne mal ins Hochland möchte. Nach meinen Recherchen ist es keine gute Idee, dies allein anzugehen. Deshalb war meine Überlegung, mit einem kleinen Mietwagen am Flughafen zu starten und dann den Mietwagen zurück zu geben und dann mit einem Bus weiter durch das Hochland. Zurück entweder eine andere Route durch das Hochland und dann wieder Mietwagen oder mit einem Mietwagen wieder die Ringstraße nach. Oder ist ein Inlandsflug interessanter? Sieht man da viel oder fliegen die zu hoch?
    Mir stellt sich jetzt die Frage, wo wechselt man sinnvollerweise vom PKW zum Bus? Was sind da günstige Möglichkeiten? Das hat bestimmt schon mal jemand ähnlich geplant.
    Mich interessieren im Hochland Landmanalaugar, die bunten Felsen und der Viti-Krater. Holuhraun wäre auch sehr interessant. Ist das per Bus erreichbar?
    Welche Sehenswürdigkeiten könnte man ebenfalls damit verbinden, die auf der Strecke liegen? Würde mich über Anregungen freuen.
    In Landmanalaugar gibt es die Hütte als Unterkunft. Ist es empfehlenswert, die restliche Strecke in einem Zug per Bus zu fahren oder wo bieten sich interessante Zwischenstopps an?

    Mit dem Bus ins Hochland, ist für alle die, die nicht selber fahren möchten eine gute Alternative.


    Die beiden Strecken, die Du genannt hast, wären ja F208 Landmannalaugar und F88 Askja.
    Man kann auch seinen Mietwagen stehen lassen und in den Bus zusteigen (geht gut bei Fahrten nach Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk und Lakigigar).


    Askja Touren starten z.B. in Reykjahlíð.


    Mir wäre das Hin und Her zu blöd, zwischendurch das Mietauto immer wieder abzugeben.
    Mal davon abgesehen, je länger die Strecke, um so teurer die Busfahrt. Ob sich das wirklich rechnet, sei dahingestellt. Zeitlich rechnet es sich jedenfalls nicht.
    Zumindest für Tagesausflüge ins Hochland würde ich das Mietauto behalten.
    Aber das ist halt meine persönliche Meinung.


    Alternativ:


    Erst den Süden machen mit Mietauto, Hochlandstrecke an den Anfang oder ans Ende setzen.
    Flug nach Akureyri - dort das gleiche
    Oder statt Flug mit dem Hochlandbus von Nord nach Süd über die 35.Der Bus hält bei Hveravellir und ich glaube auch Kerlingarfjöll.

    Forget that idea of the buses. Just take a decent 4x4 (Vitara at least, not Jimny) if you want to do rougher bits. If you keep it at easy stuff, a Jimny or alike is perfect. I have been off-road instructor, been in Iceland a few times and know about the area. The driver is his own limit, not the car, for most of us.


    Landmanna is a VERY easy reach, even ordinary Opel Kadett and similar have been spotted there. Entrance via north from Hrauneyjar) is too easy to seriously talk about it, just do it (that is the Kadett route), and the F225 you might find some waters to cross but they are sooooo easy that there is nothing against it. See, this is the most difficult crossing:


    Holuhraun can also be reached by Jimny sized 4x4's from the NORTH via F88 of east (F910). The route from there southwestwards (F910) is NOT advised with Jimny sized 4x4. Just do not do that if you're smart. By Vitara it is OK though. We met these cars there, they were OK.


    Our first trip to Iceland (2005) we did it by Land Rover (our own, pictured above) and it is all not that difficult as people make you believe, as long as you keep thinking. Just follow tracks, poles, and in case of doubt wait for others. On main tracks you will always meet people, within an hour or so at max. On sideroads it can be less though.


    Spend the night in tents, then you're safe to go anywhere and sleep anywhere, you do not have to reach the hut you booked.... As long as the tent is of good quality, and you have experience with the one you share your tent with. Bad weather can make it stressful if it's your first time togehter in a tent.


    If you want to do F910 from Askja to Nyidalur without a tent: forget it, it's a 9 hour drive if you do not go too quickly (and you should enjoy, so...). Or be prepared to at least have the possibillity to spend the night in the car when the water is too high, and you have to wait till the next morning (which we thought we needed when we were there first time, when it was extremely hot, so lots of meltwater at the end of the day). That is the only thing, really.


    Huts are full. Can be prebooked, you have to do soon, but it leaves you without any possibillity of adapting your schedule, so this is not advised. Just use a tent....

    But the level of tracks is determined by the most difficult parts. Like the F910 from Askja to Nyidalur, this was the most tricky part for us and these guys we met there obviously gave it some thought as well:



    Just go, explore, stay on the "main tracks" like F35 (Kjolur, easy!), F26 (Sprengisandur, easy) and have some fun to Landmanna (F225 easy, F208 rivercrossings easy to medium depending on weather, but still very OK, even by Jimny)
    F910 east part (Bru to Askja, so east of Askja) is easy, even by Jimny, Kverkfjoll easy, F88 easy, F210 north variant easy, just like the connecting track to F225 via Rauda.
    F330 easy, most tracks around it to the south easy to Medium (Area northeast of Thingvellir, alternative track to Geysir, TIP!).
    Tracks north of Myvatn, in the area between Husavik and Dettifoss: all easy to medium. Still very OK for Jimny.


    A bit more tricky (medium to difficult) are tracks like Gljufurleit (to Kerlingarfjoll from south-east. Gljufurleit 10 july 2009 by Land Rover - YouTube ), F910 from Askja to Nyidalur, or F210 south variant and east connection to F208. And unnumbered tracks like Vonarskard, forget going from Vonarskard to Jokulheimar. All these tracks are mainly problematic because of deep tough rivercrossings. The tracks themselves are mainly quite OK, the bit in the movie is still medium level in a Jimny. Stay away from the tracks in this paragraph if you do not have the guts.


    I do not yet know details about Thorsmork, there is extreme tracks there but you do not need these to reach the campsite, as far as I know. I have not yet been there (still on bucketlist)

    Take a map, draw some lies on the tracks I told you about, and note how far you can get by easy to medium tracks. There is sooooo much possible if you do not want to take the difficult stuff! Medium is still OK by Jimny.


    We usualy drove alone. We have only driven tracks with other vehicles if we met them, the heaviest tracks we did we all did alone (Vonarskard, F910, F210)... And went back when needed. True heroes know when to stop and return ;)

    Ich unterstütze Puffinos Meinung. Landmannalaugar ist in der Regel auf allen Routen einfach zu erreichen. Ein kleinerer bis mittlerer 4x4 ist da vollkommen ausreichend.
    Die 35 ist ja nun nicht umsonst keine F-Strasse mehr und kann mit jedem PKW befahren werden. Ein 4x4 ist natürlich etwas geeigneter, aber mehr auch nicht.
    Askja kann man gut über die östlichen Routen F905, F910 etc. erreichen. Dort sind die Furten in der Regel nicht tief, auf jeden Fall weitaus besser zu durchqueren als die auf der F88.
    Und die F26 ist bis auf die Furten bei Nyidalur gut zu befahren. An den Furten (zwei kurz hintereinander) könnte man auch abwarten bis ein weiteres Fahrzeug kommt und die Querung dann sozusagen zusammen durchführen. Warten bis jemand kommt braucht man mit Sicherheit nicht lange da dies auch eine der Haupttouristrecken im Hochland ist.
    Auf jeden Fall würde ich die Inlandstouren individuell gestalten und nicht mit Bussen. Denn du wirst dich nur ärgern wenn der Bus weiter will und du musst mit obwohl du das ein oder andere noch geniessen möchtest.
    Auch wenn du dann das erste Mal im Hochland unterwegs sein wirst bzw. die ersten Furten deines Lebens in Angriff nimmst, jeder hat mal irgendwann dort seine erste Tour gemacht und seine Erfahrungen gesammelt. Ich seh dabei jedenfalls kein Problem.


    Ich habe die oben (bis auf die F26, denn dort war ich nur per Fahrrad unterwegs) angeführten Touren übrigens mit einem serienmässigen VW-Bus T5 4motion gemacht und nirgends Probleme gehabt.
